I was inspired to write this article after a message I received in my inbox from my friend and fellow Hip Hop music artist John Robinson (also known as Lil Sci). He sent me a video of him being interviewed by South African reporter. In the interview he mention he gets more support and love from overseas markets than he does at home in the United States. He was not saying the States do not show him any love but what he was saying is the people overseas embrace his music more. At the time of this writing, he was in South Africa performing live shows and promoting his music.

In my own experience, most of my rap group Prophetix support came from outside of the United States. One of our songs was number one on a radio station in Tokyo, Japan for several weeks. We had other songs that received airplay and sales in Europe and Canada. About half of our fans came from overseas.

If you want to stay local and be a hometown favorite that is fine. However you must have a global outlook if you want to have success in the international markets. People overseas do listen to the commercial artists on the radio but you would be surprised by the amount of people who listen to underground Hip Hop.

The 3 main places to market Hip Hop music are Europe, Asia, and Africa.

I like Europe and especially England for on obvious reason: they speak English! This makes communication a lot easier when we both speak the same language. Actually fans all over the world speak English. Its really the music and the culture itself that do the communicating. Your job as a marketer is to find those people who like what you have to offer and give it to them

How do you do find these fans? We are in the Information Age so there are no excuses to why we can not have access to information. The Internet has leveled the playing field between the independent artists and major label artists. The friend I spoke about in the beginning of the article is independent and he has been that way since I have known him.

What is the difference between him and most other independent artist? He has done his market research and he understands he needs to cultivate the international relationships he has built over time. They are the relationships which keep him traveling overseas several times per year.

I am a female solo musician currently in recovery stages from major spinal surgery so am having to do more taking it easy as my body is working hard for me to heal and get better. And I am finding myself rather regularly of late turning to these three creative music makers. They have been and continue to be a balm with their healing music. They are also a valuable inspiration for me and my own independent music and studio recording engineer. What they do is so well crafted, and sensitively recorded, with their varying shades of experimental music. They dare be themselves and manage to make this accessible and popular. It is not surprising then, that their approach and what they do offers such pleasing resonance with my own independent and creative music.

So first it has to be Joanna Newsom’s latest offering Have one on Me on Drag City Records. I first came across this amazing female solo musician when her debut album Milk Eyed Mender was being played in RPM independent music store in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Her voice was a little too candid at that time for my liking but something in her lilt and turn of phrase touched me.
And for me she has only got better, enchanting me more with each new release. And to me, this triple album is just resplendent with sublime vocal tones, gorgeous harp and piano-ness and wonderful story-telling. Perhaps like my own music her music can be regarded as quite complex and niche, but it is also accessible with her delightful voice and songs.

Secondly it is Italian classical pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi to whom I have turned alot in the last year or so. He is now well heard via his TV advert and soundtrack works. It was my mother who turned me on to this slightly experimental but oh so accessible contemporary classical composer. When I tentatively played her Mammoth Mountain – the opening track to my new independent album – she said it reminded her of Ludovico Einaudi. Who? I said. And soon checked him out. And of course he is alot more talented than meagre Grade 2 ish me. But this Nightbook tour and album does involve some lovely little delay effects on the piano, courtesy of Berlin electronic musician Robert Lippok. And he makes healing music probably simply in the way that he plays it, never mind the sweet little riffs he cooks up.

And thirdly I am really enjoying Manchester based gents Elbow’s new album Build a Rocket Boys. I know they are not the most experimental music I could support but what they do is simply lush to me, and still creative music. With their gentle from the heart and harmonies and epic anthemic tunes it is hard not to be touched and carried along by the triumphant mood. And more lovely recording engineered by the band’s keyboardist Craig Potter at Blueprint Studios in Salford. Guy Garvey’s grainy and endearing voice do work on me. I also think his lyrics are really very poetic and well crafted. There’s even a healthy bit of 3/4 waltz time to elevate and relate – not enough ¾ waltz time music in the world, as it is known to be uplifting. There are a few tracks on this album that are definitely the “One Day Like this” British Gas tune follow-up with the choir and catchy choruses. This is music you can raise your voice to, in a triumphant pub sing-song sort of way and know you’re not alone.

Join a cover band who plays on cruise ships. Luxury cruise ships are a rapidly growing industry which have a high demand for entertainment. The amount of jobs for cover bands at local clubs is few and far between, so playing cruise ships is the way to go. Search on craigslist.org and keep your eyes open for these cruise ship jobs.

Be prepared to market yourself. If you are a singer/songwriter and you plan on making money off of your music, you have to treat music like a full time job.
